Eucheeanna Valley Blues:
Early inhabitants of Walton county, Florida, were Euchees --
tall, proud, peaceful, and elightened indians, staunch conservationists,
souls in harmony with the greater whole, possibly Aztecs descended
from those who, long ago, trekked from distant parts of Mexico.
And lady Anna, Euchee friend and good neighbor, once lived here too.
Nevertheless, they are all gone now, those gentle, respectable people.
The Euchees fled the waste, fraud, and abuse of advancing civilization.
Hours before leaving, Chief Sam Story died, they say, of a broken heart.
His purported gravesite, since 1832, is on private land in Red Bay, Florida.
And now, 175 years, later I endure advancing civilization by hawking that
land which once was freely available to less civilized creatures.
